What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, or those under 65 with qualifying disabilities. It helps cover the cost of doctor visits, hospital care, and prescriptions—but choosing how you receive that coverage depends on your needs.

There are multiple parts to Medicare, and it’s important to understand how they work together.

Your Medicare Options Explained

Original Medicare (Part A & Part B)

  • Part A: Hospital insurance (covers inpatient care, skilled nursing, hospice)
  • Part B: Medical insurance (covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventative services)

You get these directly through the federal government. You'll need to enroll when you're first eligible to avoid penalties.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Offered by private insurance companies, Medicare Advantage plans bundle Part A & Part B into one plan—and often include:

  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Dental, vision, and hearing benefits
  • Extra wellness perks

These plans vary by provider and region, so we help you compare options available in your area.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement plans work with Original Medicare to help cover the out-of-pocket costs like:

  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles

These plans are especially helpful if you want predictable monthly costs and more flexibility in choosing providers.

Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)

If you have Original Medicare, you’ll need a separate Part D plan for prescriptions. We help you choose a plan that fits your current medications and budget.

FAQs: Medicare in Washington

  • When should I enroll in Medicare?

Your Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after. Missing this window can lead to penalties, so it’s important to start early.

  • What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage & Supplement plans?

Medicare Advantage combines your benefits into one plan with added perks, but may limit provider choices. Medicare Supplement helps pay your share of costs under Original Medicare and often offers broader provider access. Which is right depends on your healthcare preferences, travel needs, and budget.

  • Can I have both a Supplement and Advantage plan?

No—you can only have one or the other. We'll help you choose the one that best supports your situation.

  • What if I’m still working at 65?

If you have employer coverage, you may be able to delay Medicare without penalty. We’ll help you review your employer insurance options in Washington and coordinate coverage correctly.

  • Does Medicare cover dental or vision?

Original Medicare doesn’t—but many Medicare Advantage plans do. We’ll show you how to include dental and vision insurance in your plan.

  • How much does Medicare cost?

Costs vary depending on income, plan type, and whether you need drug coverage. We help you break it all down in plain language.

  • What if I need help paying for Medicare?

You may qualify for Extra Help or a Medicare Savings Program. We’ll guide you through what’s available and how to apply.
